Controlled Substance Disposal in Hospitals and the Opioid Crisis

April 6, 2022 | Controlled Substance Disposal Compliance

The state of Nevada can be considered quite diverse, with areas like Reno and Las Vegas, the two largest gambling meccas in the U.S. combined with sparsely populated areas. Whether a Nevada resident or a visitor, hospitals, healthcare facilities and surgical centers provide the necessary medical care. The state of Nevada produces medical waste like every other state that must be handled with care to prevent infection from biohazardous waste, environmental contamination, and drug diversion.

Medical Waste Management in Nevada

Medical care facilities in Nevada including hospitals, dental facilities and veterinary clinics all produce medical and pharmaceutical waste. It is important for all of these types of facilities to know and follow the applicable regulations for medical waste management.

According to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, NDEP, the state has adopted regulations that allow for the disposal of medical waste in landfills according to approved practices. Medical waste must be collected and stored according to the Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) 444.662.  The NDEP is the primary source for information regarding the regulations and rules of special waste management in the state of Nevada. Nevada adopts the definition for Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, 49 CFR Part 173. This section details the general requirements for the packaging and shipping of medical waste transported off-site.

Because of the vastness of land in Nevada, regulations do not allow for untreated medical waste to be directly disposed of in a landfill.
